SOUTH AUSTRALIAN WAR MEMORIALS NAMES REGISTER
INTRODUCTION
The following names are those recorded on South Australian War Memorials.
The names with a memorial identification number, eg
Boer War-50,
World War 1-48,
World War 11- 1014,
Korea-47, and
Vietnam-47, are those recorded on the primary reference memorials at the site of the National War Memorial, North Terrace and the South African War Memorial North Terrace, Adelaide. These names were recorded from military data at the time of construction.
The names with the  icon are those recorded as having paid the supreme sacrifice on South Australian war memorials in including those not recorded on the primary memorials.
The names with the  icon are those recorded on South Australian war memorials as having served and survived the conflict.
The names with the  icon are those recorded on South Australian war memorials recorded as missing in action.
The names with the  icon are those currently under research for identification.

Of particular interest is that the same name is recorded on several monuments, this is quite common in some country areas where townships are in close proximity, however, in some instances, the same name is recorded on memorials some hundreds of kilometres apart indicating the person was much travelled. Rural personnel recorded on Adelaide City and Suburban memorials may be due to their transient work activities, for example, waterside and railway workers were often transferred to different localities.
It is also important to note that many names listed are similar through misspelling or transposed initials; by comparing many of the names it is easy to identify commonality and are possibly the same person. The authors consider that it is paramount to the person listed that his/her name is correctly recognised.
It will be noticed that a name may be repeated twice; this is not an anomaly as this is the actual recorded data from a memorial, indicating that two people with identical initials enlisted from the one district. Alternatively, it may be an error provided to the stonemason or a misinterpretation. From research to date, indications are that the data is accurate.
The most common causes of a discrepancy were the handwriting clarity of the various compositors or the interpretation by stonemasons. However, many names are totally dissimilar and begs the question, why the anomaly? It is not the intention of the authors to highlight discrepancies, only to accurately transcribe all names, initials and associated data recorded on all memorials.
Confusion can arise where records indicate that a person made the supreme sacrifice, yet on the locality memorial that person is listed as a returned service person. The reason for this anomaly is undetermined at this time, although initially on many memorials, only those who paid the supreme sacrifice were recorded; the recording of returned persons began later.
The spelling of the names from the Australian War Memorial were taken from the person's enlistment papers, the spelling of the names from a locality memorial are taken from family or local Council records.
All possible precautions were taken to ensure that neither invasion of privacy nor disrespect of any nature was incurred in the solemn accumulation of the sanctified names.
